I am extremely happy and proud to be able to announce that the new Italian edition of my book on the sharks of the Mediterranean Sea has just been published. It’s the most complete and detailed publication released to date on this topic.

In 2005 the book « Haie im Mittelmeer » was published in Germany: it was my first complete book on sharks of the Mediterranean Sea. Although I had written the manuscript in Italian, at the time no Italian publisher had shown interest in publishing it. My friend and colleague Harald Bänsch expressed his interest in translating the text into German. Therefore the first edition of my book was published in German by the publisher Franckh-Kosmos, with Harald Bänsch as co-author. In 2008 the book was published in Italian by Class Editori, and in 2015 it was published in French by Turtle Prod Édition and in English by McFarland & Company. With each edition, I have necessarily modified the contents of the book, both in terms of text and pictures. In 2021 the management of Class Editori informed me that they were not interested in producing a new updated Italian edition of the book and gave me the go-ahead to propose it to another publisher. I therefore decided to have the book published by Magenes Editoriale, which had already published three of my other books (« La baia degli squali volanti », « Biologia dello squalo bianco » and « Sharks of the Maldives »). The new Italian edition of the book is now available, it is very beautiful and the Foreword is by Andrew Fox.

DE MADDALENA, A. (2024): Squali del Mediterraneo. Magenes Editoriale, Milano, 292 pp., color photographs and black and white drawings. ISBN: 9788866492382. Language: Italian. Price: EUR 28.

The February 2024 Great White Shark Expedition with Shark Biology Course in South Africa has just ended. It was the second expedition of the many great white shark expeditions we have carried out successfully since 2010 in South African waters, in which we didn’t see any great white shark. The worrying thing is that it is the second consecutive expedition without great white sharks. It now seems clear that none of the three locations (False Bay, Gansbaai and Mossel Bay) where it is possible to cage dive in the Western Cape anymore offers the regularity of encounters which is necessary to carry out our expeditions focused to the observation of white sharks. I therefore made the decision to still carry out the summer expedition in February 2025 on the 3 classic sites (False Bay, Gansbaai and Mossel Bay) but to simply bill it as Shark Expedition. The Great White Shark Expedition will be the winter one, taking place in August 2024, as we will go to cage dive at Bird Island in Algoa Bay, the only cage diving site in South Africa that currently offers solid possibilities of observing white sharks.

During the February 2024 expedition we were still able to observe four different species of sharks: bronze whaler or copper shark (portrayed in the photo), shortfin mako, blue shark and smooth hammerhead.

A huge thank you to our fantastic expedition guests and to the team of Apex Shark Expeditions for another beautiful adventure in this marvelous Country that we are lucky to call home.

Finally here is the final poster of the 2-9 August 2024 Great White Shark Expedition with Shark Biology Course in South Africa!

This expedition has a brand new itinerary that includes the new great white shark cage diving site of Bird Island in Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth! We’ll also cage dive in False Bay, Cape Town, with bronze whaler or copper shark and broadnose sevengill sharks.

Please note that only for this particular expedition, domestic flights (Cape Town to Port Elizabeth return) are included in the cost of the expedition.

The expedition cost is ZAR 88000, which with today’s exchange rate, is USD 4700 or EUR 4340 or GBP 3710. There are 9 spots left to join us.

At this stage we don’t know if we’ll repeat this expedition, with this special itinerary, in the future. This will only be decided after the expedition has taken place.

Please see some more details below.
